Without Blue There’s No Green

Real Betis Balompié

In recent years, the southern coast of Spain has been overrun by Rugulopteryx Okamurae—an invasive species of algae threatening marine ecosystems and generating bio-waste that’s outpaced local communities’ ability to clean up. Despite the scale of the crisis, awareness remained low. So Real Betis Balompié—Spain’s greenest football club—set out to turn the problem into a statement.

In partnership with Hummel, Parley for the Oceans and Pyratex, Betis launched a world’s first: A football kit made from that same invasive algae. Unveiled during a LaLiga match and presented in the very waters affected by the crisis, the kit connected football fans with an urgent local issue in a way only sport can – showing them the importance of saving our oceans and seas. Because without blue, there is no green.
